The FSSAI has initiated strict measures regarding the use of 'Masala' (Calcium Carbide) to artificially ripen fruits such as mangoes, bananas, and papayas. Citing the risk of skin ailments, throat complications, and vomiting associated with this chemical, the agency has directed state authorities to conduct inspections. It further clarified that dipping fruits in ethylene solutions is also a violation of regulations. Orders have been issued to take stringent action against traders who flout these rules.
