Are You Turning Off Your Fridge?
Experts warn that frequently switching a refrigerator on and off places undue strain on the compressor, thereby shortening its lifespan. They advise against turning off the fridge—even if you are stepping out for a day or two—provided it contains perishables such as milk, yogurt, fruits, or vegetables. However, they note that if you plan to be away from home for several weeks, you may completely empty the fridge and then switch it off. They further recommend cleaning and drying the trays before doing so; otherwise, the refrigerator may develop an unpleasant odor.
