Lockup Death Case: Death Sentence for Nine Police Officers
A court in Madurai has delivered a landmark verdict regarding the 2020 lockup death case involving a father and son in Tamil Nadu. The court sentenced nine police officers to death in connection with this case. On June 19, 2020—during the COVID-19 lockdown—the police detained Jayaraj and his son, J. Bennix, in custody. They subsequently lost their lives after being subjected to torture under the guise of interrogation. The pair had been arrested on charges of keeping their mobile phone shop open beyond the permitted hours; however, investigations later revealed that these allegations were entirely baseless.
