Why should we worship the banyan tree?
The banyan tree is a symbol of wisdom, purity and prosperity. It is called the Vata tree. After the great flood, Lord Vishnu, as a child, lay down on the leaves of this tree, hence the name ‘Vatapatrashayi’. It is said that Lord Shiva resides in the shade of this tree in Kailash. Women worship this tree for their marital happiness and observe the ‘Vatasavitri Vrata’ on the full moon day of the first month of the year. Sages meditate and rest under it.
