Why the controversy over the Aravalli Mountains?
It is known that the central government has backed down on mining in the Aravalli Mountains. The Supreme Court approved the definition given by the central government that 'only those mountains that are 100 meters or taller are considered Aravalli Mountains'. However, it has now ordered that no new mining leases should be granted. However, environmentalists and the public protested, saying that 91% of the mountains are less than 100 meters tall, and the central government is doing this to excavate them in the name of mining.
