New York, December 22: Over 121 million people from 150 countries participated in the largest mass meditation in history led by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of The Art of Living and global spiritual guru. The number of meditators clearly demonstrated how humanity can find peace and tolerance through the practice of meditation amidst increasing anxiety, stress, conflict and mental health challenges among people around the world.
In 2024, the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized December 21 as ‘World Meditation Day’ with the aim of establishing mental peace and social harmony in the world. This year’s event was held at the United Nations Trusteeship Council Hall in New York City. Diplomats and senior officials participated in the meditation program led by Gurudev Ravi Shankar. People from rural and urban areas of India, as well as from Africa, Europe, Asia, America and Australia, participated in this meditation online.

The event was a deep silence. The uniqueness of this event was that people from different backgrounds from students, professionals, farmers, and prison inmates from over 60 countries witnessed the experience of meditation at the same time.
Gallup, a global public opinion organization worldwide, and The Art of Living have jointly launched a global study on meditation and social well-being, giving another important dimension to this global movement.
Under this collaboration, announced ahead of World Meditation Day, Gallup will add new questions related to meditation to its famous ‘Gallup World Poll’. This will analyze the role of meditation in mental health, life assessment and social well-being. This will create a great deal of data that was not available until now.
Recent research from Gallup shows that negative emotions like stress and anxiety are increasing at alarming levels globally, highlighting the urgent need for solutions to improve mental health.
