If there is a road, there must be a footpath
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to ensure that a dedicated space—free from encroachments—is provided for pedestrians alongside every road. A bench comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe clarified that the footpath must remain separate from the lane used by motor vehicles and must not be encroached upon under any circumstances. "The existence of a road implies the existence of a footpath for pedestrians. This does not require massive expenditure or elaborate construction," the bench observed.
