What Exactly is the Controversy Surrounding Delimitation?
The Central Government has announced that it intends to carry out a delimitation (redistribution) exercise by increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats on a *pro rata* basis. This implies that the current number of seats would increase by 50%. For instance, Telangana's seat count would rise from the current 17 to 26, while Uttar Pradesh's would increase from 80 to 120. Previously, the disparity in seats between Uttar Pradesh and Telangana stood at 63; however, if the seats are increased as proposed, this gap would widen to 94. In other words, the disparity would be exacerbated. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has argued that this approach would be unjust to the southern states—which have successfully implemented population control measures—and has suggested that the delimitation exercise be conducted without increasing the total number of seats.
