Centre Enacts Women's Reservation Act
The Women's Reservation Act, which provides for a 33% quota for women in legislative bodies, came into effect yesterday. The Central Government issued a Gazette notification declaring April 16 as the date of implementation for the Act. It is significant that this notification was issued precisely while discussions were underway in Parliament regarding amendments to the Act to facilitate its implementation in 2029. An official stated that this step was taken due to technical reasons. The Congress party lashed out, terming this a bizarre move.
