Women's Reservation: Must We Wait Until 2034?
The government had explicitly stated at the time that the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam-2023' (Women's Reservation Act) would come into effect only after the completion of the 2026 Census and the subsequent delimitation exercise. With the recent failure of the 131st Amendment Bill, the chances of this process being completed by 2029 appear slim. Analysts suggest that providing 33% reservation for women in the 2029 elections will be difficult, and the measure is more likely to come into effect by 2034. It seems women may have to wait until then!
